What AI Is Actually Doing With Your Data

The common way people use AI for data work is to drop a file into a chat window and type "analyze this." Sometimes that produces a genuinely useful answer. Sometimes it produces a confident, well-formatted, completely wrong one — and nothing in the output tells you which case you are looking at. That gap is what this bundle exists to close.

The reason the gap exists is not a clean split between "real analysis" and "fake analysis." It is a spectrum. At one end, an AI tool reads a sample of your file, or a truncated slice of it, and pattern-matches the rest from what similar data usually looks like — text that reads exactly like analysis but is not one. At the other end, a tool runs real code against your file, row by row. That second case is closer to trustworthy, but it is not automatically trustworthy: real code can still run against a truncated or misread version of your file, and even code that ran correctly against the whole file can compute the wrong thing — a sign error, a misread column, a wrong assumption baked into the generated code. Running real code makes an answer auditable in principle, since there is a trace you could check. It does not make the answer correct in fact. From the outside, in a plain chat window, none of these cases announce themselves, and the tool rarely tells you which one just happened.

This bundle is organized around that spectrum, worked through in three parts:

None of this requires a statistics background or a data science title. It requires knowing where on that spectrum your last answer actually came from.
