Prioritize Across Competing Demands

When to use this

Everything feels urgent. The board wants growth, the team wants stability, and three projects all claim to be the priority. You can't do all of them well. Use this when you need to rank competing demands and be able to defend the order out loud.

This isn't a one-shot prompt. It's a loop. You name what's competing, you name what actually matters to you, and the AI helps lay the trade-offs side by side. Then you test rankings until one feels right. The tool organizes the tension. You make the call.

A prompt to start

Open the loop with something like this, then keep going turn by turn:

I'm trying to rank some competing priorities and I want to think it through with you, not have you decide for me.

Here's what's on my plate right now:
[LIST EVERYTHING COMPETING FOR YOUR TIME, MONEY, OR ATTENTION]

The things I care about most when I weigh these:
[NAME YOUR REAL CRITERIA — e.g. revenue impact, risk, team morale, what I can actually staff]

Help me lay these out as trade-offs. Don't rank them yet. First, ask me what I'm missing, then show me where my criteria conflict. I'll take it from there.

Work through it step by step

  1. List everything that's competing. Get it all out, even the small things. Ask the AI to play back the list and flag anything you lumped together that's really two things.
  2. Name the criteria that actually matter. Not the ones that sound good. The real ones. Revenue, risk, who you'd have to pull off other work. Be honest about what drives your decisions.
  3. Weight them. Some criteria matter more than others. Tell the AI which ones win when two collide. This is the step people skip, and it's the one that decides the answer.
  4. Test a ranking. Ask it to order the list using your weights. Read the result. Where does it feel wrong? That gut reaction is data.
  5. Adjust until it feels right. When a ranking surprises you, dig in. Either a weight was off, or your gut is wrong and worth examining. Tweak and re-run until the order holds up.
  6. Say it out loud. Walk the final ranking like you're defending it to your team. If you can't explain why number three beats number four, you're not done.

What stays your call

The ranking is yours. So are the criteria behind it. The AI can sort, weight, and re-sort all day, but it doesn't know your business. It can't tell that a quiet retention risk matters more to you than an obvious growth bet. It doesn't carry the consequences. Use it to surface the trade-offs and pressure-test the order. Never let a tidy ranking stand in for a decision you haven't actually made.

Watch out for

  • The criteria and the ranking are your judgment. The tool organizes the trade-offs. It can't know what matters most to your business. If the inputs are wrong, the order is wrong, no matter how clean it looks.
  • A clean-looking ranking can hide a bad assumption. When the output looks neat, check the weights, not just the order. The math is only as good as what you told it to value.
  • It will sound confident about a call it can't make. A ranking can come back clean and reasonable and still be wrong for you. When it disagrees with your instinct, check why before you accept it.
