When to Let AI Do It

The decision

You have a task in front of you, and AI could plausibly do some or all of it. The question is how much to hand over — from "AI drafts, I finish" to "AI does the whole thing." This guide helps you make that call task by task, so you know when to hand it off and when to keep it.

Does this apply to you?

Use this when a task sits on the line between you and AI. The tool could do it, and you're deciding how much to trust it with. If the task is trivial, or clearly beyond what AI can do today, you don't have a decision to make. This is for the tasks in between, where either choice is defensible.

The options

Think of it as a dial, not a switch:

  • Do it yourself — no AI, or AI only as a sounding board.
  • AI-assisted — AI does the grunt work; you steer it and make the final call. Augmentation.
  • Let AI do it, then check — AI produces the result; you review before it counts.
  • Fully automate — AI does it with no per-instance review. The far end, and a high bar.

What actually matters

A few things should drive the call. Most else is noise:

  • Stakes and reversibility — how bad is it if the output is wrong, and how cheaply can you undo it?
  • Verifiability — can you check the result is right, and check it faster than doing the work yourself?
  • AI's reliability on this kind of task — is this something the tool is actually good at?
  • The value of your time — is doing this yourself the best use of you?
  • Accountability — who answers for the result? AI cannot.

How the options compare

Where AI earns its keep. First drafts, summaries, reformatting, boilerplate, generating options to react to — low-stakes, easily reversible work whose output you can eyeball in seconds. Here, letting AI do it and skimming the result is a clear win.

Where to keep your hands on it. The primary agent-guidance is blunt about this (OpenAI, 2025). Keep a human in the loop for actions that are "sensitive, irreversible, or have high stakes," and when the tool keeps failing. Anything you'll be held to, anything hard to take back, anything riding on current facts or real judgment — stay in the loop.

The verification trap. Delegating only saves effort if checking the output is cheaper than producing it. If verifying is as hard as doing the task, handing it to AI does not save work — it just hides the risk. It is the same principle that makes AI agents reliable: check the work against reality instead of trusting it blindly (Anthropic, 2024).

Accountability does not transfer. You still own what goes out under your name. "The AI did it" is not a defense, so the more you'll answer for it, the more you review it.

When each one wins

Let AI do it (with a quick check) when:

  • The task is low-stakes and easy to reverse.
  • You can verify the output quickly.
  • AI is reliably good at this kind of work.
  • Your time is better spent on something else.

Do it yourself, or stay hands-on, when:

  • The stakes are high or the result is hard to undo .
  • You can't check the output cheaply.
  • It turns on current facts or judgment that AI gets wrong.
  • You'll be held accountable for specifics you have to stand behind.

AI-assisted — the common middle — when:

  • AI can do the heavy lifting, but the final call, the voice, or the judgment is yours. Draft with AI; decide for yourself.

Fully automate only when:

  • The task is repetitive, well-bounded, and low-stakes, and you've watched AI do it reliably at scale. Even then, keep a spot-check.

How to decide

Answer these in order, about the task in front of you:

  1. If it's wrong, how bad is it — and can I undo it cheaply? High-stakes or one-way → stay hands-on.
  2. Can I check the output faster than I could do it? No → don't delegate; the verification costs more than it saves.
  3. Is AI actually good at this kind of task? Unsure → try it on a low-stakes case first.
  4. Is my time better spent elsewhere? Yes, and the above are green → let AI do it.
  5. Who's accountable? You → review it before it goes out.

Watch out for

  • The confident-wrong problem. AI is most dangerous when it's fluently wrong about something you didn't check. Keep a human check on anything that matters .
  • The verification trap. Delegating a task you can't cheaply verify doesn't save work — it moves the risk somewhere you're not looking.
  • Over-reliance. Handing over work you need to stay sharp at has a cost that shows up later, not today.
  • The accountability gap. You own what goes out under your name; make sure a human has actually read it.
