How to Use This Landscape¶
This is a survey of the tools used to discover, map, automate, and run business workflows — the layer that sits between a process as it exists on a whiteboard and a process that runs reliably in production. It covers four categories: tools for documenting and mapping processes, tools that reconstruct how processes actually run from system data (process mining), platforms that automate and integrate workflows (RPA, iPaaS, and no-code/low-code), and the AI agent frameworks now being applied to multi-step workflow automation.
This is deliberately distinct from the Technology Architecture & Platform tooling landscape, which covers the AI platform layer — LLM orchestration frameworks, vector databases, model evaluation, API gateways, and MLOps. The two overlap most on agent frameworks: a tool like LangGraph appears in both, but here it is framed as a way to automate a business workflow, while the platform track treats it as platform infrastructure and goes deeper on orchestration patterns and evaluation. It also connects to the rest of this track. Use it alongside the workflow optimization framework (which tells you what to optimize and in what order), the four levels of workflow AI integration (which tells you how far to push automation), and the practitioner guide (which tells you how to run the program). Anything that automates a decision-bearing workflow also falls under AI Governance & Risk.
Two honest caveats up front. First, this is one of the fastest-moving segments of enterprise software: vendors have rebranded (Tray.io became Tray.ai, Integromat became Make), changed licensing, been acquired (Apromore was acquired by Salesforce, announced November 2025), and pivoted en masse toward "agentic" automation within the past eighteen months. Second, market-size figures vary widely between research firms because each defines the category differently — treat the numbers below as directional, and note the named source and year inline. Use this landscape as a starting map, not a procurement checklist. Run proof-of-concept work against your own processes before committing at scale.
Process Mapping & Discovery Tools¶
Before you can optimize or automate a workflow, you have to see it. This category covers tools for documenting processes — diagramming, business process modeling (BPMN), collaborative workshops, and task mining. The important distinction within this category: most of these tools are manual and diagram-driven — they capture a process as people believe it works, which is subjective, a snapshot in time, and effort-intensive to keep current. Task mining is the exception: it captures actual desktop interactions to reconstruct how work is really performed. The business process management (BPM) software market that these tools sit in was estimated at roughly USD 20–24 billion in 2025 — for example, USD 21.51 billion growing at a 17.2% CAGR (Fortune Business Insights, 2025) — with estimates varying by firm and scope.

A practical program pairs the two modes: diagramming tools (Lucidchart, Visio, Miro, Bizagi) for design and communication, and task mining (above) plus process mining (next section) for discovery and validation of what actually happens.
Process Mining Tools¶
Process mining reconstructs and analyzes the real execution of a business process from event-log data — the timestamps and activity records left behind in ERP, CRM, ticketing, and other transactional systems. Where diagramming captures the intended process, mining captures the actual one, including the variants, rework loops, and bottlenecks nobody designed. The catch is consistent across every tool: mining is only as good as the event log, and extracting, cleaning, and mapping that log (case ID, activity, timestamp) is the bulk of the work. The market is small but growing fast — one estimate puts it at USD 3.66 billion in 2025 rising to USD 5.45 billion in 2026 (Fortune Business Insights, 2025).

Pricing for the enterprise platforms (Celonis, UiPath, IBM, ARIS, Signavio) is generally custom-quote and not published; published third-party figures are indicative, not list prices. The honest tradeoff is that the mining itself is the easy part — the ROI hinges on whether your organization can supply clean, well-mapped event data and then act on what the tool reveals.
Workflow Automation Platforms¶
This is the layer that actually executes work: robotic process automation (RPA) for UI-driven tasks, integration platform-as-a-service (iPaaS) for connecting applications and data, and no-code/low-code builders for business users. Nearly every vendor in this category pivoted toward "agentic" automation in 2024–2026, bolting AI agents onto their existing engines. The markets are large and growing — RPA was sized at roughly USD 22.58 billion in 2025 growing at a 19.1% CAGR (Fortune Business Insights, 2025), and iPaaS at USD 17.64 billion in 2025 (Precedence Research, 2025). Gartner has predicted that 40% of enterprise applications will integrate task-specific AI agents by 2026, up from less than 5% (Gartner, 2025).
The honest tradeoffs run through the whole category. RPA bots are brittle — they automate the user interface, so they break when a screen, field, or login flow changes, creating a permanent maintenance tax. No-code/low-code tools hit a complexity ceiling: easy things are easy, but real business logic eventually outgrows the visual builder. And the pricing is hard to predict — per-task, per-operation, per-bot, and now per-AI-credit meters compound in ways that make total cost difficult to forecast.

The general rule: reach for iPaaS (Workato, Tray.ai, Zapier, Make, n8n) when systems have APIs to connect, and for RPA (UiPath, Automation Anywhere, Power Automate desktop flows) only when they don't — because an API integration is far more durable than a bot driving a screen.
AI Agent Frameworks & Orchestration for Workflow Automation¶
The newest layer applies LLM-powered agents — software that plans and executes multi-step tasks, calling tools and APIs along the way — to business workflow automation. These split into code-first developer frameworks (LangGraph, CrewAI, Microsoft's Agent Framework, OpenAI's Agents SDK, Google's ADK) and low-code/platform offerings (Copilot Studio, n8n, the managed AWS and Google runtimes). This is exactly where this page overlaps the Technology Architecture & Platform tooling landscape; go there for the deeper orchestration-pattern and evaluation treatment. Here the framing is narrow: which framework to reach for when an agent is the right way to run a workflow.
The cross-cutting caveat is reliability. Every option below wraps an LLM making non-deterministic decisions; none eliminate that, and production use requires an evaluation and observability layer rather than blind trust. The risk is real enough that Gartner has predicted over 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027, citing escalating costs, unclear value, and inadequate risk controls (Gartner, 2025), even as Deloitte projected that 25% of companies using generative AI would launch agentic pilots in 2025, rising to 50% by 2027 (Deloitte, 2025). Treat agents as a capability to pilot and measure, not a default.

The practical split: code-first frameworks give more control at the cost of needing Python/.NET engineers and a real eval discipline; low-code platforms (Copilot Studio, n8n) get business users moving faster but are harder to debug when an agent misbehaves. Either way, the agent layer belongs at the higher levels of the four levels of workflow AI integration — and anything that lets an agent act on a decision-bearing workflow needs the controls described in AI Governance & Risk.
